What Counts as a Word?

A word is any sequence of non-whitespace characters. The tool trims the text and splits it on whitespace, so:

• it's counts as 1 word (the apostrophe is not whitespace).
• 2026-06-25 counts as 1 word (no spaces inside).

Hyphenated terms, URLs and email addresses each count as a single word because they contain no spaces. Word counting works for any language, since it splits purely on whitespace.

Characters vs Characters Without Spaces

These two numbers serve different purposes:

• Characters — counts every character including spaces, tabs and newlines. Used for general length checks.
• Characters (no spaces) — excludes all whitespace. Useful for platforms like Twitter/X that count only non-whitespace characters toward the limit.

A 280-character tweet with no spaces holds more visible content than one full of spaces, which is why the no-spaces metric matters for tight limits.

How Reading Time Is Calculated

Reading time uses an average speed of 200 words per minute (WPM), and speaking time uses 130 WPM. Both are estimates — your actual speed depends on content density and language.

• A 1,000-word article ≈ 5 minutes to read.
• A 1,000-word speech ≈ 7.7 minutes to deliver.

For technical or dense content, real reading time is longer; for skimmable text, it is shorter.
