A PDF cropper trims the visible area of PDF pages by adjusting each page's CropBox — cutting white margins, scanner shadows, and fax headers without removing pages or reducing quality. This tool crops all pages or a custom range entirely in your browser using pdf-lib, with a live preview so you see the result before downloading. No uploads, no sign-up, unlimited use.

How to use

  1. 1

    Upload your PDF

Click to select a PDF file or drag and drop it into the upload box. The file is read into your browser's memory and never sent anywhere.

  2. 2

    Set the margins

Drag the top, right, bottom, and left sliders to trim white space. The highlighted box on the live preview shows exactly what each page will keep.

  3. 3

    Choose the pages

Crop every page at once, or switch to a custom range like 1-3, 5 to crop only the pages that need it.

  4. 4

    Crop the PDF

Click Crop PDF. The tool rewrites the page crop boxes in seconds — text stays selectable and quality stays identical.

  5. 5

    Download the result

Save your cropped PDF and check it in any reader. Not perfect? Adjust the sliders and crop again, as many times as you like.

Understanding PDF Cropping

Why do PDFs end up with giant margins?

Oversized margins rarely come from the author. Scanners capture the whole glass bed, so every page carries black borders or gray shadows around the real content. Fax gateways and office printers add header strips with timestamps. Presentation decks exported for projection keep acres of white space that look absurd on a phone screen. And documents assembled from mixed sources — a contract here, a scanned appendix there — end up with inconsistent page geometry that screams unprofessional.

The traditional fixes are all bad: reprinting to a new PDF bloats the file and rasterizes text, screenshotting pages destroys searchability, and server-side croppers demand uploading sensitive documents to a stranger's infrastructure. Cropping the CropBox directly avoids every one of these trade-offs — it is a metadata-level change that takes seconds and preserves everything else about the file.

How PDF cropping works technically

Every PDF page carries several boundary boxes, and viewers display the intersection defined by the CropBox. Our tool computes a new CropBox from your margin percentages — for example, 5% on each side keeps the central 90% of the page — and writes it into each selected page object with pdf-lib, entirely in your browser. Because content streams, fonts, and images are untouched, text remains selectable, file size barely changes, and the operation is fully reversible by cropping again with zero margins.

Two caveats are worth knowing. First, rotated pages (landscape scans stored as rotated portrait) crop relative to the stored orientation, so check the preview before downloading. Second, cropping hides content rather than deleting it: the bytes outside the box remain in the file. For ordinary margin-trimming that reversibility is a feature, but if you are redacting secrets, use a true redaction workflow instead — cropping is not redaction.

When to Crop a PDF

Common situations where cropping beats every alternative.

Scanner Shadows

Remove black borders and hole-punch shadows from scanned pages in seconds.

Fax Headers

Cut timestamp strips and cover artifacts off received faxes and printouts.

Slide Decks

Trim projection-sized margins so slides read comfortably on phones and tablets.

Uniform Print Margins

Give mixed-source documents consistent geometry before printing or binding.

FAQ

Are my files secure when I crop a PDF here?
Yes. Your PDF is processed entirely within your browser using the client-side pdf-lib engine. No files are uploaded to any server, stored in a database, or transmitted over the network. The tool reads your PDF from memory, adjusts the crop boxes of the pages you selected, and generates the output file locally. When you close the browser tab, all file data is cleared from memory. This makes the tool safe for confidential documents like contracts, financial statements, medical records, or internal reports where privacy is mandated by law or company policy.
How do I crop a PDF with this tool?
Upload your PDF, then drag the four margin sliders (top, right, bottom, left) while watching the live preview — the highlighted box shows exactly what will remain. Choose all pages or type a custom range like 1-3, 5, then click Crop PDF and download the result. The whole flow takes under a minute: there is no registration, no watermark added, and no limit on how many files you process. If the preview does not look right, adjust the sliders and crop again — experimentation is free and instant.
Will cropping reduce the quality of my PDF?
No. Cropping here is non-destructive: the tool only changes each page's CropBox, the PDF metadata rectangle that tells viewers which part of the page to display. Text stays selectable, vector graphics stay sharp, and images are not re-encoded, so there is zero quality loss. The original content outside the crop box technically remains in the file, which means you can always revert by re-cropping with zero margins. If you need the file itself to shrink as well, run the result through our Compress PDF tool afterwards.
Can I crop only some pages of a PDF?
Yes. Switch from All pages to Custom range and type the pages you want, for example 1-3, 5, 8-10. The tool parses ranges, single pages, and comma-separated mixes, skips invalid numbers automatically, and leaves every other page untouched. This is ideal for documents where only some pages have scanner shadows or fax headers — crop the offenders and keep the clean pages exactly as they were. Overlapping or out-of-order input is normalized for you.
What is the difference between cropping, splitting, and resizing a PDF?
Cropping trims the visible area of existing pages without removing any page — perfect for cutting white margins or scanner borders. Splitting extracts whole pages into separate files, which is what you want when dividing a document. Resizing (scaling content) changes the physical page dimensions for printing. If your problem is ugly borders or oversized margins on otherwise fine pages, cropping is the right operation; if you need fewer pages, use our Split PDF tool instead.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no artificial file size limit. Since all processing happens in your browser's memory, the practical limit is your device's available RAM — most modern computers handle PDFs up to several hundred megabytes without issues. Cropping itself is a lightweight operation because it only rewrites page boxes rather than re-rendering content, so even thousand-page documents process quickly. If a gigantic file makes the tab sluggish, close other tabs or crop it in page ranges.
Does cropping work on scanned PDFs?
Yes. Scanned pages are just images inside a PDF wrapper, and the CropBox applies to them exactly like any other page — scanner shadows, hole punches, and black borders disappear the same way. Cropping does not make scans searchable, though: if you need selectable text from scans, run OCR software first, then crop the OCR'd file. Our preview renders the actual page pixels, so what you see trimmed is exactly what disappears.
Can I crop a password-protected PDF?
If the PDF only has an owner password (restricting editing or printing), cropping usually works because reading the pages is permitted. If it has a user password required just to open the file, you must remove that protection first — the tool cannot bypass open passwords, as doing so would break PDF security. Free the file in your PDF reader with the password you own, save an unlocked copy, then crop it here.
How is this different from iLovePDF or Smallpdf cropping?
The core difference is privacy plus cost. iLovePDF and Smallpdf upload your document to their servers, cap free usage (around 2 files per day on free tiers), and reserve features for subscribers. Our cropper runs 100% locally with no accounts, no daily caps, and no watermarks — and adds a live visual preview with per-side margin control that makes precise crops easy. For confidential or high-volume cropping, local processing wins on both safety and convenience.
