Background Remover

AI background removal uses a machine learning model trained on millions of images to distinguish between the foreground subject and the background. The model — in our case, Google's MediaPipe Selfie Segmentation — analyzes each pixel and classifies it as either 'subject' or 'background'. For each pixel along the boundary between subject and background, the model also estimates an alpha (transparency) value, which determines how opaque or transparent that pixel should be.

This process is called semantic segmentation. The model doesn't just look at color — it understands the shape, texture, and context of the image. This is why AI mode can handle complex backgrounds that Color Key mode cannot: a person standing in front of a varied scene (trees, buildings, sky) can be cleanly separated because the model recognizes the human shape, not just a specific color.

AI Mode is the right choice when your image has a complex or varied background — outdoor scenes, indoor rooms, patterned walls, or any background with multiple colors and textures. It is also the best choice for images of people, especially when hair and fur are involved, because the model is specifically trained to handle these challenging edges.

Color Key Mode is faster and simpler. It works by making all pixels of a specific color transparent. This is ideal for images shot on a solid-color backdrop — typically white, green (green screen), or blue. Product photographers often use a white seamless backdrop specifically so the background can be easily removed with Color Key mode. The advantage of Color Key is that it requires no model download, works instantly, and gives you precise control via the tolerance slider.
