Every photo taken with a digital camera or smartphone contains EXIF metadata -- invisible data embedded in the image file that describes how, when, and where the photo was taken. This includes the camera or phone model, lens specifications, exposure settings (ISO, aperture, shutter speed, focal length), the exact date and time the photo was captured, and potentially GPS coordinates precise to within a few meters. When you share photos online without stripping EXIF data, you're sharing all this information with anyone who downloads the image.

GPS data in EXIF is a particular privacy concern. If your phone's location services are enabled when you take a photo, the GPS coordinates are embedded in the EXIF data. Sharing that photo online reveals exactly where it was taken -- your home, workplace, or child's school. Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter automatically strip EXIF data on upload, but many other platforms (forums, blogs, email attachments) do not. Always strip EXIF data before sharing photos on platforms that don't do it automatically.

EXIF data also includes thumbnail images (sometimes multiple), copyright notices, and software identification. Professional photographers use EXIF to embed copyright information and contact details in their images. However, the same data can be used to identify what camera and editing software was used, potentially revealing workflow details. The piexif.js library can read, modify, and write EXIF data in JPEG files without re-encoding the image, preserving full image quality.

Keep EXIF data when: storing original photos in your personal archive (the metadata is valuable for organizing and searching), submitting photos to stock agencies (they require EXIF data for verification), or sharing photos with other photographers for technical discussion. Remove EXIF data when: sharing photos publicly online (privacy), emailing photos to strangers, uploading to forums or classifieds, or sharing photos of children or sensitive locations.

Our tool lets you selectively remove specific EXIF fields rather than stripping all metadata at once. You might want to keep the camera settings (for photography discussions) while removing GPS data (for privacy). You can also edit EXIF fields -- for example, correcting an incorrect timestamp or adding a copyright notice. The tool preserves the image quality because it modifies only the EXIF segment of the JPEG file, not the image data itself.
