What EXIF data reveals about you

Every photo taken with a digital camera or smartphone contains EXIF metadata -- invisible data embedded in the image file that describes how, when, and where the photo was taken. This includes the camera or phone model, lens specifications, exposure settings (ISO, aperture, shutter speed, focal length), the exact date and time the photo was captured, and potentially GPS coordinates precise to within a few meters. When you share photos online without stripping EXIF data, you're sharing all this information with anyone who downloads the image.

GPS data in EXIF is a particular privacy concern. If your phone's location services are enabled when you take a photo, the GPS coordinates are embedded in the EXIF data. What is EXIF data?
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) data is metadata embedded in photo files by cameras and smartphones. It can contain over 100 different fields including: camera make and model, lens information, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length, flash usage, date and time the photo was taken, software used for editing, image dimensions, color space, and critically — GPS coordinates showing the exact location where the photo was taken. Some smartphones also embed the device orientation, exposure bias, white balance settings, and even the direction the camera was facing (using the compass). This metadata is invisible when viewing the photo but can be read by any image viewer, file manager, or online service that receives the file.
Why should I remove metadata?
To protect your privacy. EXIF metadata can reveal your exact location (GPS coordinates accurate to within a few meters), the date and time you took the photo, the device you used (which can be used for device fingerprinting), and even the software you used to edit it. If you share photos online — on social media, forums, marketplaces, or dating apps — the embedded EXIF data may be accessible to anyone who downloads the file. This can expose your home address, workplace, daily routine, or travel patterns. Stripping EXIF data before sharing is especially important for photos of children, sensitive locations, or confidential business activities.
Does removing metadata reduce quality?
No. Our tool creates a new copy of the image without the metadata, maintaining the exact same visual quality. The tool removes only the EXIF, IPTC, and XMP metadata segments from the file — it does not re-compress, re-sample, or alter the actual image pixels in any way. The output file has the same resolution, color depth, and compression level as the original. The only difference is that the file may be slightly smaller (by a few kilobytes) because the metadata has been removed. The cleaned image is visually identical to the original — you can compare them pixel-by-pixel and find no difference.
Which files are supported?
The tool supports JPEG, PNG, WebP, and HEIC/HEIF files. These are the most common image formats that contain EXIF metadata. JPEG is the most common format for photos from digital cameras and smartphones. PNG can contain EXIF data but it is less common. WebP supports EXIF metadata and is increasingly used for web images. HEIC is the default photo format on Apple devices running iOS 11+ and macOS High Sierra+. If your browser does not support HEIC decoding (Firefox and some Linux browsers), you may need to convert HEIC files to JPEG first. The tool does not support RAW formats (CR2, NEF, ARW, DNG) — use a dedicated RAW converter first.
What is the difference between EXIF, IPTC, and XMP metadata?
EXIF is technical metadata captured by the camera (settings, GPS, timestamp). IPTC is editorial metadata added by photographers or software (copyright notices, keywords, captions, contact information). XMP is Adobe's extensible metadata format that can contain both technical and editorial information, as well as custom fields defined by software. To be safe, always strip EXIF data yourself before sharing photos, especially on platforms where you are not certain of their metadata handling policies.
Is my image data sent to a server?
No. All EXIF parsing and stripping happens entirely in your browser using a client-side JavaScript library (exifr/piexif). Your image files are loaded directly into the browser's memory, parsed for metadata, and re-saved without the metadata — all without any network requests. The tool does not upload, store, or transmit your images. When you close the browser tab, all image data and metadata are cleared from memory immediately. This makes the tool safe to use for sensitive photos, confidential business documents, medical images, or any scenario where image data should not be exposed to third-party servers.
