A pixel art converter transforms regular images into pixelated, retro-style artwork by reducing the resolution and quantizing the color palette. It simulates the look of 8-bit and 16-bit video game graphics by grouping pixels into blocks and limiting colors to a small palette. This tool processes images using the Canvas API -- all conversion happens locally in your browser.

Pixelation is the process of reducing an image's apparent resolution by grouping adjacent pixels into larger blocks and assigning each block a single color (the average or dominant color of the original pixels). For example, with a block size of 8, every 8×8 group of pixels is replaced by a single color, effectively reducing the image resolution by a factor of 8 while keeping the original canvas size. This creates the characteristic blocky look of retro video game graphics.
Color quantization further enhances the pixel art aesthetic by reducing the number of unique colors in the image. A full-color image may contain thousands of distinct colors, but classic pixel art used hardware-limited palettes: the NES had 54 colors, the Game Boy had 4, and the Amiga had 32. Our tool applies color quantization using a modified median-cut algorithm, which clusters similar colors together and represents each cluster with its average color. You can choose the palette size --4, 8, 16, 32, or 64 colors -- to match different retro aesthetics.
The combination of pixelation and color quantization produces convincing pixel art from any source image. For best results, start with a simple image (a portrait or object with clear outlines) and use a small block size (4-8 pixels) with a limited palette (8-16 colors). Complex photographs with many fine details and gradients may not produce satisfying results -- the pixelation process loses fine details, and the color quantization may create banding artifacts in smooth gradients.
Different retro platforms had distinct color palettes that define their visual style. The NES palette has 54 colors with a slightly washed-out, warm look. The Game Boy palette is 4 shades of green (or grayscale on the Game Boy Pocket). The Commodore 64 has 16 colors with distinctive hues. The Amiga AGA palette has 256 colors from a 12-bit RGB space. Our tool doesn't replicate specific hardware palettes, but you can approximate them by choosing a similar palette size and adjusting the dithering settings.
Dithering is a technique used to simulate more colors than the palette actually contains by placing different-colored pixels in patterns that the eye blends into intermediate shades. Floyd-Steinberg dithering (the most common algorithm) propagates the quantization error to neighboring pixels, creating a characteristic stippled pattern that's a hallmark of retro graphics. Ordered dithering (Bayer matrix) creates regular patterns that look more 'digital.' Our tool supports both dithering modes, or you can disable dithering for a flat, posterized look.
